Just Move, a Well-being Program for Students and Educators.

{ WELL-BEING IN SCHOOLS } We are designing a learning eco-system of a holistic well-being program at the International School of Helsingborg where the health of students and teachers is in the spotlight.

We piloted the program during the school year 2019-2020 with a focus on physical education every day. In august 2020 we implemented the program for all PYP. During the pandemic we saw the need to focus on educators’ health too and implemented the Athlete’s mindset for educators. The program is anchored in the IB PYP PSPE curriculum and adress the whole human being.

Just Move enhances cognitive performance and well-being. It’s based on neuroscience, the growth mindset, the principles of identity+active living +interaction, influenced by physical literacy and addresses the whole human being.

In February 2021 we held a Hackathon Sprint + Feedback and Support sessions with grade 1-6 PYP teachers.

They defined the now, looked at the challenges they had, what they wanted to keep, what they wanted to develop and what the ideal situation would look like.

In line with this week’s development of the Just Move Well-Being for Educators and Students Program at the International School of Helsingborg (IB), we met with the PYP3 teachers today and worked on developing the Just Move well-being program to fit THEIR specific needs.

We were talking about areas such as the impact of different neurotransmitters in the room, growth mindset, social- and emotional well-being, a classroom without walls, outdoor education, cognitive performance made happen through the brain and body connection, agency, and much more.

When you meet the PYP3 teachers you notice the fun and the smiles. They are open-minded, growth-mindset thinkers, and EXTREMELY creative! When we add #endorphins to a situation anything can happen: creativity, healthy communication, fruitful collaboration, and critical thinking made useful and constructive.

Designing a hybrid learning space between humans and technology

The space between humans and tech is a fascinating place, especially when it comes to learning.

-How can we create agile learning spaces where we combine tech without losing the so important human touch?

We have seen that working behind a computer every day is causing zoom fatigue, demotivation and depression.

-What are the innovative, visionary ways that we have so far missed out on?

Education is about the exploration of the soul

Education is about the exploration of the soul, about purpose. Education is not a one-fits-all activity.

We write 2021. It’s time to reflect on: What serves young people now? What needs to be developed? What do we need to bin? What would the ideal learning situations be?

Learning eco-systems are human-made, hence, humans can change those eco-systems too when the systems don’t serve us any-longer.

We have the possibility now to create more individualized learning experiences for young people, where they explore their heart’s yearnings and purpose, where they develop their creativity, enhance their communication, collaboration and innovation skills to take on societal and planetary challenges.

The social, emotional and physical health of our youth must be in the spotlight and get our TLC. Health is the foundation. If there is worry, too little exercise, lack of sleep, disengagement the young person will find it more difficult to learn and connect with others.

{ FOCUS } We Aha! Accelerating Education love our Thursdays. That’s the time of the week when do our deep, focus work at Hetch, Helsingborg’s new innovation hub. A good read about deep work is “Deep work” by Cal Newport.

⚜️FOCUS ⚜️ is rare in a world that is full of distractions. That’s why we isolate ourselves for a full afternoon and evening and do work without interruption. It’s the time when we create our materials & tools for our courses and Hackathons. Stay tuned. We will soon be on Udemy.

An Athlete’s Mindset for Educators

{ AN ATHLETE’S MINDSET FOR EDUCATORS }

One of the most – if not the most – important factors of student success in school is the educator in the room.

We CARE about teacher 🤹🏻‍♀️/ educator🎨 / coach 🏆/ guide🎼 / rockstar 🎸 / WELL-BEING pre-, during, and post- covid, and we have developed a Hackathon to develop and accelerate an athlete’s mindset for educators.

The Athlete’s Mindset for Educators is part of the Aha! WellBeing program that covers physical, social, and emotional health for students and educators, anchored in the IB PSPE curriculum.

Us educators have been extremely challenged during the pandemic. It’s like we are all running a marathon together where we need to be enduring + show resilience. It’s not easy all the time. Teachers need support (and champagne).

We come with a support program that speaks 2021, based on applied neuroscience, focusing on building an oxytocin + serotonin-rich culture in the learning community, where community members laugh and have fun together despite hardships. We focus on the role of endorphins and dopamine for student and educator engagement and building trusting environments.

When educators are seen and heard they feel better and can show up with more ease, authenticity and warmth together with the students.

Empower Educators

{ EMPOWER EDUCATORS }

Student excellence in school is highly dependent on the educator in the room, the way the educator sees the student, creates safety and uses effective and engaging learning strategies.

My 16-year old son goes to IBMYP 5 and does ONLINE learning. My 13-year old daughter goes to IBMYP 2 does BLENDED learning: onsite/online. I, who teach PYP 5&6 do ONSITE learning. The primary years program has been open all the time throughout the pandemic in Sweden.

Educators + agility = true.

How to EMPOWER educators then, so we won’t see burn outs?

The pandemic has proven the importance of educators as essential workers in society, and schools with important core functions in society.

So: HOW to ameliorate educators’ working conditions, upscale salaries and attract young people to become teachers?

In Sweden there is a lack of 23.000 teachers.

Teachers’ well-being is crucial and must be prioritized. A happy and healthy teacher will show up with authenticity, warmth, ease and passion in the classroom.

We are Clubhoused

{ CLUBHOUSE } I have spent a fair amount of time at Clubhouse this evening and what struck me – again – as many times before during this crazy year, is that the exchange of knowledge and ideas is fundamentally & exponentially expanding rapidly.

It’s AMAZING to be working on purpose in education. I have the world’s best job : facilitating learning and human growth. How incredibly COOL is that!

My question to you is: How deeply can humans love if we educate the heart?

Learning is a community activity that fosters culture.

The more educated a society is the greater the capabilities are to take a society out of poverty, to collaborate, to co-create living spaces together so that all people can develop as healthy humans.

The higher the level of education, the higher life expectancy, the lower teen pregnancies and so forth.

Think of learning in a community as swarm intelligence. The stronger we are together and can easily access each other’s knowledge, the better for all.

Learning is a community activity that fosters culture.

A Math Mindset

MATH. We experience that many students lack confidence in Math so we have set up #microlearnings to empower, what we call, a Math Mindset. Growth mindset for Math.

We help the students to realize that their brain is mouldable, has neuroplasticity, and can change.

We show them the notion of specificity: If you practice tennis you will be skillful in tennis. If you practice the timetables, you will become good at multiplication.

We strengthen their mindset by statements like:

– I am not there YET.
I may need more time.
I may need another method.
I may need some help.

We foster a learning community where there are “shoulder buddies” and teams to ask, where the students learn from each other. We encourage them to ask questions and applaud each other when succeeding.

We look at mistakes as golden opportunities from where we can learn.

You would hear us say: “Wow, great opportunity here. Let’s explore how we can solve it”.

We ignite collaborative learning, that we learn with and from each other.

De självförsörjande på slottet Sonnenburg

Sonnenburg, 1943

Esmee och Elise van der Bos var de enda som var kvar av den stora familjen van der Bos, då de andra blivit (ivägdragna) från slottet en mörk höstkväll 1942. Esmee och Elise hade gömt sig i ett matförråd och tyskarna hade inte hittat dem. Mamma, pappa, storebror Edmund och kusinerna Rose och Lola hade allihopa blivit ivägdragna från slottet i tyskarna händer. Vad som hänt dem visste inte Esmee och Elise. Det hade varit en tuff tid. De hade dock inte haft tid att vara ledsna, för överlevnadsinstinkten hade tagit över. Esmee var vid tillfället 19 år gammal och Elise 17.

Slottet Sonnenburg var känt för dess stora trädgård var odlingana prukade i solen under vår, sommar och höst. Man odlade olika sorters bönor, potatis, pumpa, squash, gurka, olika lökar, kryddor, tomater, olika sallader, blomkål, rädisor, rödbetor, morötter, äpplen, päron, plommon och mycket mer. Man tog hand om maten på ett bra sätt. Saltade viss mat för vintern. Hade viss frukt i vinterförråd. Gjorde sylter. Torkade örter för te och kryddblandningar, fermenterade grönsaker. Ja, man klarade sig ganska väl.

Under krigstiden hade man dessutom blivit ganska bra på att gömma maten efter man skördat. Slottet var inte stort, men ändå, ett slott. Det var inte iögonfallande. Man måste veta var det låg. Från Amersfoort skulle man färdas på slingriga vägar in i skogen, för att till slut komma till slottet.

När kriget dånade i Holland kom där ofta folk och knackade på dörren för att få härbärge. Familjen hjälpte alltid till. Esmee och Elise visste hur man odlade och tog hand om mat. Det var det som gjorde att de överlevde andra världskriget, långt från alla andra, ensamma på slottet i två år, utan att någon visste att de var där.


När kriget var slut.

Kusinerna Lola och Rose stod och tittade på trädgården och log ikapp! Tänk att de hade lyckats ha trägården i generationer och att den överlevde andra världskriget. De hade gjort om slottet från en privat villa till ett bed and breakfast, både för gäster som bara önskade en kortare vistelse, men även för människor som kom och sökte efter en hållbarare värld att leva i och ville lära sig om ett hållbart kök 2019.

Lieke kom till Sonnenburg i maj. Själv bodde hon i London och jobbade som journalist på ett matmagasin, men skulle vara hemma i Holland under hela maj månad, då hennes mamma, som hade en svår sjukdom, hade valt att planera för anestesti.

Lieke ville gärna bo nära Amersfoort, då hennes familj på mammans sida bodde i området. Slottsverksamheten hade fått mycket uppmärksamhet och vunnit det holländska hållbarhetspriset 2018 för deras fantastiska självhushåll under modern tid. Nu var Lieke nyfiken på detta och tänkte att det skulle vara hälsobringande att vara på en sådan plats under den kommande perioden, som skulle bli svår, emotionellt sett, för Lieke.

Frank var en digital nomad och reste jorden runt. Han hade nyss varit och vandrat på Santiago de la Compostella och ville nu bara ha platt mark under fötterna. Frank kom från Tyskland och hade hört om slottet Sonnenburg från sin farfar Hans. Hans hade gömt en dagbok på slottet under krigstiden, och Frank ville nu se om farfaderns berättelse var sann.

Clemetine var franskyska och pluggade literatur vid Sorbonne. Hon kom från en kulturell familj. Mamman var författare och pappan var prisbelönt art director. Själv studerade Clementine litteraturkunskap och filosofi och konst i den franska huvudstaden. Hon hade också ett sidointresse av mat och hade en stor matsida på Instagram och älskade att resa till platser som var snygga. Därför hade hon kommit till Sonnenburg.

Det fanns en till sak som hon var intresserad av. Tavlan, som hennes moster Gwendoline, från Provence pratat om. Tavlan som skulle vara magisk.

Johan var kusinernas vän. Han var grannen som bodde tvärs över vägen på en stor bondgård, var hans familj bott i århundranden. Han brukade hjälpa kusinerna med det mesta som tillhörde fix i huset. Om han själv inte visste hur man skulle göra, så kände han alltid någon i byn som kunde hjälpa till.

Mariette var en gammal dam som bodde i det gamla skogsvaktarhuset. Hon var fenomenal på örter och hälsobringande mat. Hon var lite av en enstöring men delade gärna med sig av sin kunskap till små grupper. När kusinerna var små trodde de att hon var en häxa på riktigt.

Människan håller på att ta ihjäl djur och raserna förminskas dag för dag. Hettan sveper sig över Europa och ovanför Polcirkeln brinner det i skogarna på grund av värmen. Politikerna bråkar och delar folk i oppositioner istället för att få dem att jobba ihop. På sociala medier fångar algoritmer upp debatter som polariserar istället för att sammanbinder folk. Fattigdomen breder ut sig i takt med att många jobb försvinner till AI. AI blir smartare och smartare och snart kan de ta hand om dem själva. Är de att lita på? I Kina har man klonat fem människor och övervakningskamerorna har nu gjort sina intrång i de privata hemmen. Om du vägrar att installera dem så hamnar du i fängelse. En miljard kineser vågar inte protestera. Ännu. Fetma och cancer skördar fler människoliv och barn och unga blir mer och mer deprimerade på grund av ensamhet framför skärmar. Vuxna blir stressade på grund av för mycket jobb och för lite samverkan med andra. Att vara ensam är det vanliga.

Där och då, i den stunden i universum, träffar vi dessa människor som tror på något annat.

Som har hört viskningarna från deras förfäder.

Vad det betyder att vara människa.

De är nu på Sonnenburg och kommer snart att träffas över en god middag ute i trädgården

The Role of Safety in Any Human Relationship.

{ CONNECTION } The FIRST thing we humans do when we meet another human is to quickly scan the situation as a threat ( survival ) or a safe place to be. We do this quickly and automatically. We analyze body-language, face expressions, tone of voice and words. It’s all well wired in the old part of our brain. Depending on the answer – threat or safety- we form the relationship, the collaboration.

Here comes the most important part.

SAFETY is the number one factor in how a relationship / collaboration will continue.

It determines the way you will communicate and relate to each other.

It tells if the ceiling is high, if there is room for failure and development. If the energy is breathable or tense. If the “temperature” is cold, warm or hot.

It also predicts if there is room for laughter, quirkyness and fun.

Let’s go back to threat or safety.

If there is some sort of threat hanging in the air the relationship / collaboration will have some degrees of cortisol. Cortisol can be good because it helps our survival, but it also triggers fear, anger, frustration etc. What will happen with collaboration if there is fear?

If we feel safe; oxytocin and serotonin will enter our system and communication, collaboration & creativity can develop better.

From Disengagement to Engagement

From disengagement to engagement: How to inspire teenagers during online learning.

DISENGAGEMENT:

✨Have the students sit and listen a full day in front of their computers = passive, tired passengers instead of active, self-driven learners.

✨Speak with a monotonous voice, show no face-expressions.

✨Don’t laugh and above all, don’t tell any kind of jokes. Don’t activate endorphins.

✨Give tasks that have no relevance whatsoever in the young person’s life.

ENGAGEMENT:

✨Use storytelling as a tool. Inspire them with captivating stories.

✨CONNECT each time with each student -> oxytocin, serotonin

✨LAUGH

✨Think hooks, trailers, and the GAMIFICATION of learning. Make small, bite-sized modules that all start and end with something spectacular = dopamine. Think of how youth motivates themselves hours on end in front of games on their screen. Use the concept to motivate learning!

✨Even better; collaborate with teacher colleagues and assign young people exciting, real-life, authentic challenges/problems that they have to solve. Set up a HUB where they can check-in. Have them practice project management. Dopamine drives inquiry, curiosity, and motivation.

Connection to Nature

N a t u r e – Is our home, it teaches us most of the things we need to know: love, care, beauty, the grandness of being alive, have fun, calm, excitement, awe, happiness, survival, resilience, creativity, communication, collaboration, critical thinking, presence, connection, imagination, prediction, scenario planning, physical activity, a sense for details, opening our senses, sensing the energy of all living things and how all is connected, breathing, meta-cognition …. and so much more.

Nature makes us calmer and more clear-minded.

When I was a kid, the mountains & forests were my playgrounds up in Lapland. There were no indoor play centers, hardly any stores not to mention malls, no Yoump Yards, not much being “served” to us, so we had to be creative ourselves.

As an adult, I am often drawn to the sea. That’s why I live five minutes walk from the seashore.

If I had a day of too much dwelling in my thinking, I would seek the sea to put the balance right. It helps!

Most indigenous people have a sacred connection to nature, to earth. The Sami people up in the north of Sweden feel the soul in every living object. That’s how I grew up to be too. My dad often guided my thinking when it came to being kind to nature, just by prioritizing spending time there. He would know what plants, trees, and animals were called and could tell stories about them. My mum sometimes said that it was my dad’s and my Sami genes that often pulled us out into the wilderness! That we got restless having to be indoors.

I found it difficult to be indoors too long, and as an adult, I have a strong pull to go outside…

They say that a child who lives close to nature will never hurt her.🔆☀️🌊🌴🌲🌻❄️🏔

⚡️The first thing for your brain to solve is your SURVIVAL, not your happiness.

⚡️You always scan people and situations as either a)threatening or b)safe/supporting.

⚡️In a crisis like COVID-19 the human brain will focus on COLLABORATION and PROBLEM-SOLVING.

⚡️CORTISOL (panic, stress, anger) in the system stops creativity and collaboration. OXYTOCIN ( love, care, touch, emotionally involved ) in the system strengthens your willingness to collaborate and create with others.
